Shipston-on-Stour in the Cotswolds
Shipston-on-Stour is located on the River Stour in beautiful rural southern Warwickshire, and is about 10 miles south of Shakespeare's picturesque Stratford-upon-Avon.
The town itself is one of the interesting towns in the Cotswolds, and is worth making the side trip to view the intriguing shops in and around town.
It is located on the A3400 road (formerly the A34) between Stratford and Oxford and was once an important stopping place for stagecoaches. Many former coaching inns remain in the town in the area of the High Street.
How to get there:
The Cotswolds lies between the M5, M40 and M4 motorways. The side roads, or main non-motorway roads through the Cotswolds are the A46 which goes through Bath, Stroud and Cheltenham. Other roads to use are the A419 from Swindon, Cirencester, Stroud; and the A429 via Cirencester, Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-in-Marsh; and the A40 from Oxford via Burford and Cheltenham.
The Cotswold area is served by two major railway lines in the south by the main Bristol, Bath, London High Speed Train from Paddington Station via Reading, and in the west from Birmingham to Bristol via Gloucester main line. In addition, the Cotswold Line runs directly through the Cotswolds from Oxford to Cheltenham and beyond. The high speed and local services on the Golden Valley Line runs from Swindon to Gloucester via Kemble and Stroud.
High-speed services to London run from Kemble station near Cirencester, Kingham station near Stow-on-the-Wold, Charlbury station and Moreton-in-Marsh stations. Mainline high-speed rail services to the big cities such as Birmingham, Bristol and London run from stations such as Bath, Swindon, Oxford, Cheltenham and Worcester.
National Express Coach: Services run from Cheltenham which acts as a hub for for the coach/bus line. There are also local bus services around the area which are quite frequent. The best source of information of course is the local tourist information centres.
