Swanage is located at the foot of the Purbeck Hills at the eastern end of the Purbeck Peninsula and offers an award winning beach, safe swimming, sports and leisure activities and to top it off, generally good weather all year round.
This part of Dorset has especially spectacular clifftop walks for you to enjoy. While here, you should follow the historic trail around the town and then take a nostalgic steam train trip through the picturesque countryside of Purbeck to Corfe Castle. The Purbeck coast is truly something special and something for everyone, whether you want to spend your time relaxing on the soft sand beaches, exploring the coast path or hunting for fossils and walking in the footsteps of dinosaurs. Most of Purbeck lies within an area called Jurassic Coast and is of outstanding natural beauty, as mentioned earlier, this coastline has been designated as the Jurassic Coast part of England's first natural World Heritage Site, when you visit you will see that the Isle of Purbeck is truly a wonderful place.
The South West Coast Path itself follows the whole of the coastline of Dorset starting at Shell Bay. For 27 miles you can experience the glorious sandy beaches, dramatic cliff tops, incredible rock formations, spectacular geological features and hidden coves that make up the Purbeck coastline. While you're enjoying the coast path walk keep your eyes open for the wide selection of wildlife that calls Purbeck home, where you'll see birds including puffins, razorbills, guillemots and sealife including dolphins and porpoises and beautiful plant life including pyramidal orchids. While staying in Swanage you have to spend a day by the sea, the Purbeck area has many beaches that will please everyone, you'll find safe family beaches to remote bays. The sea along the Purbeck coast is generally calm, making it a safe place for the family to enjoy and at the same time it's a great place to to spend time just to explore this coast town. Along the coast at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door you will find dramatic scenery that has been inspiring people for generations. Further west along the Jurassic Coast Path you will come to the rocky ledges at Kimmeridge, which is ideal for exploring the rock formations in this National Heritage Park. The Purbeck coast is truly something special and has something for everyone. For example; exploring the coast path or hunting for fossils and walking in the footsteps of dinosaurs is just plain great fun. The other options include spending your time relaxing on the soft golden sand beaches of Studland Bay and Shell Bay to the east towards Poole and Bournemouth, and of course the other option is staying close to all the facilities or Swanage and finding even more secluded spots.
